What Visible Defects Can a Garlic Sorting Machine Separate?

A garlic sorting machine can separate cloves that differ visibly from the accepted product in color, skin coverage, shape, size or surface condition. Typical targets include cloves with attached purple skin, incomplete peeling, yellow or brown discoloration, visible mold-like spots, breakage and plant debris. The exact result, however, depends on the contrast in the processor’s own garlic—not on a universal list of defects.

That distinction matters. An optical sorter evaluates the exterior it can see. It can make a fast, repeatable decision on visible differences, but it cannot confirm a hidden defect inside a clove whose surface looks normal. A useful machine trial therefore begins with real accepted, rejected and borderline samples.

1. Attached Skin and Surface Color Differences

Peeled-garlic lines often still contain cloves with purple skin attached, pieces that were only partly peeled and cloves whose appearance falls outside the intended white or cream-colored grade. These are strong candidates for optical sorting because the decision is based on a visible contrast.

A WESORT garlic color sorter can be configured around the processor’s commercial standard. One customer may reject every trace of purple skin; another may accept minor skin on a lower grade. The machine recipe should follow that boundary instead of treating every color variation as waste.

The useful question is not simply whether the machine can detect “broken garlic.” The processor should define how much damage is acceptable. A small chipped edge may be allowed, while a half clove belongs in another product stream. A Real Garlic Sorting Result from Mexico

A Mexican garlic processor installed a WESORT 6SXZ-68L single-channel belt machine after peeling. The accepted target was a cleaner, more uniform group of light-colored cloves; the reject stream included cloves retaining purple skin, incompletely peeled pieces and visibly off-color material.

The belt presented the irregular cloves in a controlled layer for inspection. After sorting, the accepted product was visibly more uniform, while the separated stream contained a much higher concentration of the unwanted skin and color groups. The customer gained a repeatable quality-control step before packing and needed less repetitive visual checking.

How to Test Your Garlic Before Choosing a Machine

Start with a representative mixed sample, not a handful of obvious rejects. Include normal production variation, every unwanted category and the difficult pieces on which inspectors may disagree. Keep separate reference bags for accepted product, definite rejects and borderline cloves.
